MR Spin Behavior During RF Pulses: T2 vs. T2' Relaxation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: We investigate the behavior of the MR magnetization vector during RF pulses in the presence of rapid transverse relaxation. The transverse relaxation is divided into two separate mechanisms: Homogeneously broadened lines which resulting in irreversible T2 amplitude decay, and inhomogeneously broadened lines resulting in dephasing and in principle refocusable T2’. While the two different mechanisms by themselves result in identical free induction decay (FID) behavior, it is shown they do not follow the same magnetization trajectory during the application of external RF pulses. Therefore, RF optimization strategies based solely on the classical Bloch equations [1-3] may benefit from additional modifications described here when imaging species with high inhomogeneously broadened linewidths (for example due to susceptibility effects) as found in bone.

Introduction: Ultrashort echo time (UTE) MRI requires specialized pulse sequences to overcome the short T2 relaxation of the MR signal encountered in tissues such as ligaments, tendon or cortical bone. Imaging short T2 tissues is achieved in UTE by acquiring the Free Induction Decay (FID) of the MR signal as soon after the end of the RF excitation pulse as possible. This is typically accomplish...
متن کاملFast Spin Echo Imaging
In conventional spin echo (SE) imaging, the longitudinal magnetization (that is generated by the presence of the main magnetic field, B0) is tipped into the transverse plane using a radiofrequency (RF) pulse that tips the magnetization 90 degrees. Once in the transverse plane, the magnetization rotates, or precesses, around the axis of the main magnetic field. As the transverse magnetization pr...
متن کاملEstimation of B 0 and B 1 MR Inhomogeneity via Relaxations
The authors describe a method for the basic and RF field inhomogeneity estimation in NMR based on the measurement of T2 and T2*. The method combines the gradient and spin echo acquisition techniques to differentiate the T2 and T2* relaxation times. Exponential approximation of the relaxation process has to be performed. Experimental results for the plastic and copper specimens are shown.

Introduction: Clinical MR is predominantly geared towards the imaging of “long” T2 species (T2’s greater than 10 ms). However, musculoskeletal (MSK) tissues of interest, such as ligaments (T2 ≈ 4-10 ms), tendons (T2 ≈ 2 ms) and cortical bone (T2 ≈ 0.5ms) often exhibit low signal intensity in images acquired using clinical MR sequences [1]. Three specialized sequences designed to overcome these ...
متن کاملT2*-compensated Transmit SENSE RF pulses
Introduction Selective excitation in more than one dimension is plagued by effects that are due to the long duration of the RF pulses and gradient trajectories needed. B0 off-resonances, for example, dephase magnetization contributions created at different points in time during the excitation process. As a consequence, these contributions do not add up consistently which causes artifacts in the...
